Thank you for using LB Food Scanner ("the App"). This Privacy Policy is designed to help you understand what information we collect, why we collect it, and how you can manage it. Your privacy is critically important to us, and we are committed to protecting it.
1. The Core Principle
The App is designed with your privacy as a priority. The vast majority of your data, including your scan history, allergen preferences, and settings, is stored only on your device and is not transmitted to us or any third party.
2. Information We Collect and How We Use It
To provide its features, the App needs to collect or access certain types of information.
a. Information Collected and Processed on Your Device
This data is processed locally on your phone and is not sent to our servers.
- Camera Access:
- Why we need it: The App's core functions are scanning barcodes and recognizing text from ingredient lists. This requires access to your device's camera.
- How it's used: The camera is only active when you are on the "Scan Barcode" or "Take Photo" screens. The live camera feed is processed in real-time on your device by Google's ML Kit service on Android or Apple's Vision framework on iOS. We do not store the camera feed.
- Image Captures: When you use the "Take Photo" feature, the photo is processed on-device for text recognition. The photo is not saved unless you explicitly do so, and it is not transmitted off your device.
- Scan History & Translation Memory:
- What it is: The App saves a history of scanned products and a "Translation Memory" (cached translations) to speed up the app and save data.
- How it's stored: Stored exclusively on your device using the device's internal storage.
- Your Control: You can disable history saving, delete individual items, or wipe your entire history at any time in the settings.
- Personalized Settings and Preferences: Allergen selections and nutritional alert toggles are stored locally.
b. Information Shared with Third-Party Services
To provide product information and translation, the App communicates with external services. We do not upload personal info beyond the data required for these features.
- Product Barcodes: Scanned barcodes are sent to Open Food Facts and FoodRepo.org to retrieve product data.
- Ingredient Text for Translation:
- Android: Text may be shared with Google ML Kit, LibreTranslate, or Lingva Translate based on your choices.
- iOS: Text may be processed using Apple Translate, LibreTranslate, or Lingva Translate.
This is only used to translate label text for your viewing.
- Reporting a Missing Product: If you report a product, the barcode is sent to Open Food Facts to help improve their community database.
3. Summary of Third-Party Services
Our App utilizes the following third-party libraries and services:
- Google ML Kit (Android): Barcode scanning, OCR, and language identification.
- Apple Translate (iOS): Ingredient translation services.
- Open Food Facts & FoodRepo.org: Retrieving product data.
- LibreTranslate & Lingva Translate: Online translation services.
- Coil: Image loading library.
4. Your Rights and Choices
- Camera Permission: Can be revoked at any time in system settings.
- Data Deletion: You can clear your history or reset the app to delete all local data.
- Internet Access: Required for database lookups and online translations.
5. Children's Privacy
The App is not intended for use by children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect any personal information from them.
6. Data Security
Since sensitive data is stored locally, its security is primarily protected by your own device's security (e.g., screen lock and encryption).
7. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this policy periodically to reflect new features or service changes.
